Snowy owls are an odd-one-out in this migration series, for they're not your typical seasonal migrants. Instead, they are irruptive migrants, as large numbers move south unpredictably in winter, driven primarily by abundance of lemming populations (their food) on their Arctic breeding grounds.
For this piece, I painted the bird silhouette in white underglaze, then carved out the brown details on her feather. The grassy and snowy background reflects her habitat of open, snowy, grassy landscapes where they use their white plumage for camouflage.
Volume: ~11-13 oz
Wheel-thrown (or occationally slab-built) stoneware, hand-sculpted and painted with underglazes and glazes.
Care Guide
Care Guide
for ceramic drinkware & tableware
- Dishwasher-safe. Handwashing is recommended to best preserve your favorite critters.
- Microwave-safe with caution. White clay pieces are generally fine. Dark clays (brown, red, or black) tend to overheat in my experience, so microwaving is not advised, or use extra care when handling.
- Avoid sudden temperature shifts. Let pieces reach room temperature before heating or chilling.
- Avoid soaking in standing water for long to prevent staining.
