Sanderlings are long-distant migrants. They are known for incredible migratory journeys of 1,800 up to 6,000 miles to coastal beaches worldwide, including South America, Africa, and Australia. They travel between Arctic tundra nesting grounds and wintering habitats twice a year.
I first saw sanderlings at the Point Reyes State Park in California before I started birding. There were a dozen of them in a group running into the water edge to find food in the sand as the wave retreated, then rushed back to shore when the next wave rolled up. That beach scene stayed with me.
Volume: ~11-13 oz
Wheel-thrown (or occationally slab-built) stoneware, hand-sculpted and painted with underglazes and glazes.
Care Guide
Care Guide
for ceramic drinkware & tableware
- Dishwasher-safe. Handwashing is recommended to best preserve your favorite critters.
- Microwave-safe with caution. White clay pieces are generally fine. Dark clays (brown, red, or black) tend to overheat in my experience, so microwaving is not advised, or use extra care when handling.
- Avoid sudden temperature shifts. Let pieces reach room temperature before heating or chilling.
- Avoid soaking in standing water for long to prevent staining.
